I wrote my Gigglebytes column for various publications (print and the Internet) from 1986 through 2008. In addition to new material, I’m posting some favorites here in the Classics category. If you fondly remember a column that isn’t here, let me know and I’ll try to post it.

Most of these columns originally ran in publications that no longer exist, forcing me to repost the columns here to make them available. Computer User, which carried Gigglebytes from March, 2000 to May, 2003, still posts my columns on their site. They didn’t always do a good job of formatting the column, however. Where I am pleased with their presentation, I post only a link to their page; where I am not, I repost the column and the link.

I have backdated everything to the date of original publication. So if a post talks about programs you only vaguely remember, check its date and you’ll know why.

I fondly remember the error message “NoVision did a bad thing” combined with the notification that the software was about to erase everything and reformat your disk. With the wonderfully reassuring “OK” button just to confirm that this was indeed what you wanted to have happen.

I fondly remember two columns I’d like to see posted: The first Beatles lyrics parody, and the one with a quote similar to “a good user interface is important.. how else can you explain the popularity of dos, wordperfect, dbase, and autocad”, which I think belongs on wikiquote. And isn’t it funny how autocad is still around?

I am very fond of a column I read in seventh or eight grade, circa 1993-1994. It was about someone trying to buy a modem in a computer store, and the salesman trying to sell him a sound card, the SoundMindNBodyIMRU2 — which was, according to the salesman, a “very… sound modem”.

Funny how things stick with you for over 20 years.

I’ve been fond enough of that column to name every one of my Wifi access points SoundMindNBodyIMRU2. It even flowed nicely to when the dual band ones came out — SoundMindNBodyIMRU2-Fast has a ring to it as well. 🙂

It’d be great to see that column on this site, if you can find it. 🙂
